The Turning 05:05
Early morning sky You and I could track the phases of our lives Across the riverside Chasing, churning Something caught our eye Turing over stones Pouring over time to find the hidden words To find a space to fit Pieces, passing Years rolling by And you slow it down to breathe But the movement brings relief When it all turns wrong But you’re still all right When the roads long gone But you still got light to drive on ahead And the turning feels like breathing But the stillness can’t provide any peace of mind Early evening sky You and I have passed those phases of our lives We’ve seen the other side Of hurting, healing So much we’ve left behind And you slow it down to grieve But the movement brings relief When it all turns wrong But you’re still all right When the roads long gone But you still got light to drive on ahead And the turning feels like breathing But the stillness can’t provide any peace of mind And the turning feels like flying

Oldies moan on the radio And I’m feeling past my age And the mirror shows the feet of crows And my drum beat sounds like fools on parade Well she shines from bed like the rising sun And she burns for the stage to play And a fathers love, and the contradictions To stay in the moment, not to wish the days away It’s hard to show a smiling face When the world is falling apart And I know she sees the smallest trace Of sadness in my heart Cold wind blows on a dreary day And I’m feeling past my age And the winter slows a distant glow Of a new hope rising, or an asteroid on the way It’s hard to show a smiling face When the world is falling apart And I know she sees the smallest trace Of sadness in my heart And the slowness of it all And the simple and the small Is all we ever wanted this to be But the pressures built too tall Became the prison walls And we just can’t push through it But our prison’s a fortress too It’s hard to show a smiling face When the world is falling apart And I know she sees the smallest trace Of sadness in my heart

I got my guns, I got my guns I got my guns, I got lots of guns Down in my bunker, I got boxes of food I got cans on the shelf until 2062 And all of these things that I wanted to do But I’m stuck underground, until we make it through I got my guns, I got my guns I got my guns, I got lots of guns Down in my bunker, got a black bugout bag And a riffle on my shoulder just in case we’re attacked So many things that I wanna get back But we just have to wait until the systems intact I used to feel the sun and hear the sound of happiness I used to feel a part of the world spinning around this emptiness I was finding my place until the world started tumbling down in loneliness Now I’m turning it over and over and over again Now I’m older and older And colder and colder underground I got my guns, I got my guns I got my guns, I got lots of guns Big ones, small ones Short ones, tall ones, I got my guns Down in my bunker, got a wood burning stove I got cases filled with ammo when there’s fire in the hole So many places that I wanted to go But the voices they tell me survival’s my goal If there’s ever a problem I got a place to go But since there’s always a problem At least I got something to show for it If there’s ever a problem Or some face that I don’t know I got a lifeboat ready to sail But nobody wants to go with me I used to feel the sun and hear the sound of happiness I used to feel a part of the world spinning around this emptiness I was finding my place until the world started tumbling down in loneliness Now I’m turning it over and over and over again Now I’m older and older And colder and colder underground A crack in the tooth The rot in the root The things that you fear Are the things you can’t shoot But you got a gun

We were born in love then shattered I never knew this could matter so much All the times we were torn and tattered together Still, I wish I had known you better I don’t know when we first met But I know you were there In the cradle where I slept forming promises In the err of my youth, when the games were already set I held to those promises, I hoped we could make them true At the time it seemed so easy But looking back we were already caught in the storm As I ran through those years I forgot you were there I didn’t know what was coming I didn’t know it wouldn’t last In those school halls, I wandered around Aimlessly with nothing to be found And all of the words in those books that I read Well they never said the things that I thought they said And we swam beyond the shallows Seeking shelter in the shadows together And the roll of the thunder bound us forever Still, I wish I had known you better And we ran through the wild of the nights And we ran with wild in our eyes Latch key kids just looking for some light To fill in the holes with a different kind of life And as I ran through those years I forgot you were there Floodwaters rise and levees overflow Pulled by the currents into rivers of our own Around every corner biding my time Walking it straight, staying out of sight Under the fluorescent lights, I went looking for the door Though lost as I was it was you I was looking for Deep in dreams I still see your face The missing pieces still so had to replace And I hope you found a way to stitch things up right For the pieces that we lost In the waters, we may never find May we love this world when we leave it May we leave it better than we found it together And the skies could clear for the dreamers who follow us Still, I wish I had known you better Still, I wish I had known you better

Ice encases the field, The dawn reveals its stillness Crystal to water, Solid to liquid Has a thawing come here Gather around my children, Whose sight is too near Gather around my elders, Whose ears can’t hear Let me circle around you, Let me hold your fear Has a thawing come here Laying fallow my field, Waiting to harvest and reap my yield Oh youth can be tragic , But aging makes clear A thawing grows near Young and old, My center holds I’ll grow for you to hold onto And I love you all, And I won’t let go Even though I shake I will not fall Stretching warm in the field Entangled together with dove and deer Rotting to rising A numbness to feel, A heart thaws here, A future thaws here, Resolution thaws here, Resurrection thaws here My heart thaws here, My future thaws here Resolution thaws here, Resurrection thaws here My heart thaws here, My lungs thaws here My voice thaws here, My love thaws here

Everything laid before you, so many stars to follow Breathing the future through your lungs And we were all so elated, nothing was faded in our eyes Soon to be complicated by Something was forming in the air Invisible wars that left threadbare And we were just waiting for it Ya we were just waiting for it to come You never asked for anything more You were just pleased with all the joy Your world was so uncluttered that Loneliness didn’t mean a thing Clear as a bell you could ring But something was taking over And we were so brokenhearted that We stumbled before we started out And now we’re just waiting for it Ya we were just waiting for a return And the hurts that I hide And the wait of my worried mind It finds its way to you Now we’re just playing biding time Under a different-looking sky Hoping your future turns out fine And we were so brokenhearted that We stumbled before we started out And now we’re just waiting for it Ya we were just waiting for a return Ya I can’t keep waiting for it I can’t keep waiting for a return

I remember the days when being poor weren’t nothing Convenient-store strip-mall dollar shopping But the love was good so what else were we wanting Except maybe a little more time Cheap-rent-life and TV lights over dinner Middle of the night, highlife twilight benders And it ended the same in the bed we made was warmer Than any southern fire Here we only run in circles chasing the sun I miss those days, the slow ones we were kicking down Ya a few bucks from the bank and we could throw it out With blurry faces rambling through this nothing town With nothing better to do And I love the way we kept things real between us Year after year trouble never found us And god I love the way that we could steam it up In the corners of the night Here we only run in circles chasing the sun Well I wish I had a better way to say it all I’m a wordless brain nostalgic lame naiveté But I’ll play the fool for you if means it’ll make you stay And play the fool with me I know that looking back ain’t always easy Tricks of the light and the heart can shade things differently But chasing you ain’t ever cast shade on anything It only brings me shine Here we only run in circles chasing the sun

Coyote pounces the snow And swallows it whole Antlered buck tracks The white-tails wherever they go And it makes me feel lucky to be On the warm side of a winter window with you Though we’re stony standing still through these stranding winter years Vulture tree huddles three Silhouettes against the sky Sudden freeze, feathered wings Feeling too cold to fly And it makes me feel lucky to be On the warm side of a winter window with you Though we’re haunted hanging on through these ghosted winter years From my window I see Survival drives a hard bargain to keep From my window I’ll be Dreaming of the day we too run free Coyote pounces the snow And swallows me whole Running doe jumps the fences Scattering the crows And it makes me feel hungry to be On the cold side of a winter window with you We could wander through the wild of these wounded winter years

I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail Send my soul to sink or sail Climb that mountain too steep to scale I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail I’m gonna fight and I’m gonna flail Shout down powers too big to fail Aim my hammer to sink the nail I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail Sometimes I feel hazy, a little foggy and crazy Even worse when I feel too lazy To keep this big wheel, Big wheel in spin, spin, spin I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail Press my body against the rails Shake my fists at the gates of hell I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail Sometimes I feel hazy, a little foggy and crazy Even worse when I feel too lazy To keep this big wheel, Big wheel in spin, spin, spin I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail Scour the earth to find the grail Pierce through the guise of hidden veil I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail I’m gonna fight and I’m gonna flail Press my body against the rails Shake my fists at the gates of hell I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail Shake my fists at the gates of hell I’m gonna moan and I’m gonna wail And may peace be within you After all that you’ve been through

Me and you Ignite and combust and launch with escape velocity Me and you Blast through the atmosphere but exit oh so quietly And I do remember the feel of solid ground And I love the way we launch to orbit around Massive stars, massive stars, exploding Massive stars, massive stars, exploding Me and you Radio transmit life from the edge of the galaxy Me and you Pull at the strings of light and love and honesty And I do remember the feel of your mouth on mine And I love the way your breath filled up mine Massive stars, massive stars, exploding Past our stars light and dark, unfolding Me and you, always find our way through the clouds Me and you, always find our way back to the ground Massive hearts, massive hearts, enfolding

Hey little garden you’ve grown on me Shown me that time slows down in a seed Digging through you helps me find part of me Hey little garden you’ve grown Row after row of cultivating Stillness and peace in a world built for speed Get ourselves back to the garden we need Hey little garden you’ve shown me We never fell far from your tree Homes within homes all integrating Birds eat the bugs and the bugs eat the leaves One feeds the other and the other feeds me Hey little garden you’ve shown me You never take more than you need Hey little garden you’ve grown on me Shown me that time slows down in a seed Digging through you helps me find part of me Hey little garden you’ve grown You can’t smell the earth when you’re digging through a screen You can’t feel the wind when you’re scrolling through a dream You can’t taste the sun if you can’t stand the heat You can’t grow your roots if your always moving Drop after drop of rain falling Water feeds the soil and soil holds the seed Faith in a world of things you can’t see Hey little garden you’ve shown me The spirit lives under our feet Hey little garden you’ve grown on me Shown me that time slows down in a seed Digging through you helps me find part of me Hey little garden we’ve grown
